Fiona Apple’s Cannabis Arrest: What Will She Do Next?

It was TMZ who first broke the story of the arrest of 90s anti-pop princess Fiona Apple’s Sept. 19 arrest.  Apple, 35, did not deny the marijuana was hers when authorities discovered hash and cannabis in the tour bus she’s using to promote her new album, “The Idler Wheel”.

But the interesting question is, what will she do with this situation?  Never one to bow to authority, Apple’s star began to fall after she took the stage during the 1997 MTV music awards and told her fans, “ This world is bullshit, and you shouldn’t model your life on what we think is cool, and what we’re wearing and what we’re saying.”  She was criticized heavily for this speech, and called ungrateful.  But perhaps this new controversy could work positively for Apple, if she plays her cards right.

Apple’s mugshot

The Idler Wheel is the first album Apple has released in seven years, and even with all of her talent, the album didn’t get much buzz.  But now her name and that rather unflattering mug shot are spreading like wild fire because people love controversy.

Details unfolded of Texas police officers using K9 to sniff the bus where .01 pounds of weed (baseball-sized)  and .01 pounds of hash (golf ball-sized) were stashed in Apple’s blue backpack.

Apple spent the night in a Texas jail and was released the next day on a $10,000 bond.

According to the Christian Science Monitor, under the Texas Controlled Substances Act, Apple was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession, and felony possession of a substance in the Class 2 penalty group, hashish. Yes, hashish and THC resinous extracts of cannabis or synthetic THC are felony offenses, inexplicably.

That is the last updated posted on Apple’s brush with the law, but if she is still the same girl she was in 1997, she’s not afraid of a little controversy, and perhaps she could use that controversy to speak on behalf of the cannabis activists who can’t have their voices heard as easily as she can.  And perhaps while she’s at it, she can use this boost in fame to make the public aware of her album and remind them of the beautiful and unique voice that brought her to fame in the first place.
